Solution:

Developed a finite element model of the intertank and calculated the shock response shown in Figure 1:

• Space Shuttle Intertank model was developed from drawings
• Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) separation shock loading was applied
• Response velocity contours displayed

• SRS plotted as a function of distance from the shock source
• Analysis predicted reduced shock failure risk for the redesigned Solid Rocket Booster Bolt Catcher
